KATA SHURI-TE :
Původní formou kata pro Shuri - Te byly NAIHANCHI. V těchto kata je procvičován pohyb ze strany na stranu se zdůrazněním pevného postoje. Bohužel nevíme, kdo je vytvořil a kdy byly tyto kata zavedeny do tréninku. Když Yasutsune ITOSU začal učit karate ve veřejných školách v roce 1901, zjistil, že Naihanchi forma je složitá pro malé děti, a proto vytvořil v roce 1905 PINAN formu, která je jednodušší a vhodnější pro děti. Při vytváření těchto forem mu byl velkým pomocníkem jeho nejlepší student Chomo HANASHIRO.
Historie říká, že když Itosu vytvářel Pinan kata, použil při tom formu Kusanku a Chanan kata. Kusanku kata se do dnešních dnů dochovaly, a tak je velice jednoduché jejich vliv rozpoznat. Chanan kata nemá dlouhou historii, nikdo ji neprocvičoval a proto se postupně vytratila z historie karate. Nicméně víme, že Chanan je čínský výraz a může to být název města, nebo jméno nějaké osoby. Dnes jsou Naihanchi a Pinan formy považovány za základní formy pro Shuri styl.
PASSAI a KUSANKU formy jsou jedny z důležitých úrovní v Shuri stylu. Sokon Matsumura - Itosův učitel, vytvořil kata, kterou dnes známe jako PASSAI-DAI nebo také jako Matsumura-no-Passai. Itosu pak přepracoval originální Passai a vytvořil PASSAI-SHO, neboli Itosu-no-Passai. Itosu chtěl vysvětlit důležitost vzdálenosti v sebeobraně a proto například zaměnil techniku Mae-geri ( kop vpřed ) za Sokuto-geri ( kop stranou ). Na rozdíl od Passai formy není známo, kdo vytvořil Kusanku kata. Někteří věří, že existuje ještě třetí forma nazývaná Shiho-kusanku. Ale tato forma byla pravděpodobně vytvořena v posledních letech. Jedna z legend popisuje Kusanku jako čínského diplomata, který navštívil Okinawu. Tuto myšlenku podporuje i Tobeho kniha, která hovoří o člověku jménem Kusanku a který učil bojové umění na Okinawě. Tento historický poznatek se ale někteří snaží zdiskreditovat a tvrdí, že kata Kusanku vytvořil Itosu.
SESAN, další střední kata v Shuri stylu, je velice zvláštní v pohledu, postoji a otáčení. Pohyby přední nohy jsou dosti podobné Naha Sesan, ale přeci jen se tyto kata od sebe radikálně liší.
Nejvýše postavená kata v Shuri jsou CHINTO a GOJUSHIHO. Gojushiho je nejvyšší formou a mohou jí dosáhnout jen ti nejlepší studenti. Některé styly dnes cvičí dvě Gojushiho. Nicméně jedna z nich byla vytvořena později. Proto se za ortodoxní považuje vždy forma dai.
Když Gichin FUNAKOSHI odjel v roce 1922 do Japonska, znal celkem 16 kata :
5 Pinan, 3 Naihanchi, 2 Passai, 2 Kusanku, Wansu, Chinto, Jitte a Sesan. Ze všech těchto kata jen u Pinan a Passai formy se ví kdo je vytvořil. Je dobré také vědět, že Funakoshiho provedení kata bylo shodné s okinawskými učiteli v čele s Yasutsune Itosem. Všechny modifikace byly prováděny později spíše studenty, kteří u Gichina Funakoshiho cvičili. Avšak pro znalost a orientaci v Shuri stylu by bylo dobré znát původní ortodoxní formy, aby adepti karate lépe chápali podstatu a význam těchto kata.
